SUPPORT BASE AND PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS POLITICAL PARTIES IN THE ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS OF H.P(PART-1)

BACKGROUND-

-After formation of Himachal Pradesh there was various praja mandals which were active there. Later on these praja mandals were Merged to Form Himachal Pradesh Congress committee
-Himachal was Chief Commissioner state from 1948 to 1951 and political History of Himachal Pradesh saw the beginning from 1951

1952 -1957

1st election for legislative Assembly of part c state took place in Himachal Pradesh for total 36 assembly seats
– Majorly performance in this election was as follows
CONGRESS-won 24 Seats
KISAN MAJDOOR PARTY– 3 Seats
SC FEDERATION– 1 Seat
And rest to Independent candidates

1957 -62
As Himachal Pradesh was converted into Union territory so there was territorial Council In 1956, despite majority recommendation of the States Re-organisation Commission for its merger with Punjab, Himachal Pradesh retained its separate identity, but as a Union territory under an Administrator designated, Lieutenant-Governor, and without any elected Assembly. 

– After a lapse of seven years, in 1963, the Assembly was revived, with the Territorial Council in existence since 1957 being converted into the Legislative Assembly with a strength of 43, including two nominated members. 

From 1962 to 1967 There was still Dominance of Congress party in Assembly and there was no effective opposition

1967 – 1972
– This was the time when seed of two party system was sown in Himachal Pradesh. There was emergence of BHARTIYA JAN SANGH
This party was able to capture 7 Seats out of 68
BEGINNING OF SUB REGIONALISM
-in this election Congress won majority seats from OLD HIMACHAL and Bhartiya jan sangh got majority seats from New Himachal securing 4 Seats from Kangra region

REASON FOR RISE OF 2 PARTY SYSTEM
1.rise of Jan sangh
2.Politics of Sub regionalism
3.Internal factionalism in Congress

1972-1976
-In the election of 1972 Congess again regained the momentum in Himachal pradesh because
1. in 1971 statehood was accorded to Himachal pradesh
2.victory of India in Bangladesh war
3.Strong political coordination among Congress leaders
– there was deckine of number of seats won by Jan sangh

Y.S PARMAR RESIGNED FROM THE POST OF CHIEF MINISTER:
In 1977 soon after the establishment of the Janta Government at the
center decision was taken to dissolved along with the other state
assemblies in nine states. The Himachal assembly was also dissolved
along the other state assembly election. In the main time Dr. Y.S. Parmar
had submitted his registration from the chief Minister ship in January
1977 which created leadership vacuum in the state.
The hope of kangra region getting the next Chief Minister, were dashed
when Thakur Ram Lal was installed on the next Chief Minister for small period of time and after his appointment assembly election took place in 1977
